The National Strategy for the Management of Asylum and Migration Emphasizes Security, Effective Integration, and Return from Abroad
23. 06. 2025
On June 12, 2025, the Government of the Slovak Republic approved, by Resolution No. 300/2025, the National Strategy of the Slovak Republic for the Management of Asylum and Migration. This document is a strategic framework for the next five years, containing measures to support the management of asylum and migration within Slovak territory. It builds upon the Migration Policy of the Slovak Republic with a Vision until 2025.
The strategy reflects current European trends and responds to Slovakia’s specific needs in areas of legal and illegal migration, integration of foreigners, and the return of Slovaks from abroad.
Slovakia is facing several challenges — from demographic aging and a shortage of labor in key sectors, to the need for effective protection of the EU’s external borders, and dealing with the consequences of the war conflict in Ukraine.
The strategy emphasizes:
-
Strengthening protection of external borders and cooperation with countries of origin and transit,
-
Effective integration of foreigners, including access to basic rights and services,
-
Support for managed legal migration that addresses growing labor market needs and contributes to economic competitiveness,
-
Improvement of return policy and combating illegal employment,
-
Measures to prevent and fight human trafficking and smuggling,
-
Preparedness for emergencies and rapid crisis response.
A new element is the focus on the return of Slovaks living abroad and supporting their reintegration into the labor market. The strategy is based on cooperation with international partners, local governments, and the non-profit sector, while addressing current security risks and labor market needs. In this way, the Slovak Republic confirms its commitment to managing migration responsibly, in line with European standards, and with a focus on security, solidarity, and national prosperity.
Due to its cross-sectoral and comprehensive nature, the measures arising from the strategy will be detailed in an action plan, including the definition of responsible actors and a timeline for implementation.
