Application for national visa

A national visa is issued for a stay of more than three months, for a period not exceeding one year.

The national visa may be granted to a third-country national, if

  • it is necessary in connection with granting of a residence permit in the Slovak Republic (for 90 days),
  • the applicant is older than 15 years and is admitted to language training in a language school in length at least 25 teaching hours per week (for the length of language education up to 31.07 of the calendar year),
  • it is necessary to meet the obligations of the Slovak Republic arising from international agreements (maximum of one year) or
  • it is in the interest of the Slovak Republic (maximum of one year).

The national visa may also be granted to a family member of a refugee or a foreigner who has been granted subsidiary protection – if it does not endanger state security or public order (for a strictly necessary time period).

Application for a national visa may be filed on an official form at:

  • The Embassy of the Slovak Republic,
  • The Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force, if the individual is staying lawfully in the territory of the Slovak Republic and only in the case of interest of the Slovak Republic (see point d.)

Submit the following with the application for a national visa:

  • Valid travel document,
  • Colour photo 3 x 3.5 cm showing current appearance,
  • Document proving the purpose of residence,
  • Proof of health insurance.

The Embassy or the Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force may request additional documents from a third-country national only if the documents submitted with the application are insufficient for granting of the national visa. The third-country national shall personally appear for an interview upon being invited.

The Embassy or the Bureau of Border and Foreign Police of the Presidium of the Police Force will decide whether to grant a national visa within 30 days of submission of the application. A national visa is attached to a travel document in the form of a sticker. The validity of the travel document must be at least 90 days longer before the national visa expires.

 

national visa shall end, as a general rule, at least 90 days before the expiry of the travel document.
